Nexperia acquires 100% ownership of Newport Wafer Fab, officially renamed Nexperia Newport

July 05, 2021: Nexperia, a specialist in basic semiconductor devices, announced that it has completed the acquisition of Newport Wafer Fab (NWF), a move that will enable the company to achieve ambitious growth goals and investments to further increase global production capacity. With this acquisition, Nexperia has acquired 100% ownership of the Welsh semiconductor silicon chip production facility. Nexperia Newport will continue to have a strong presence in the Welsh semiconductor ecosystem, leading technology research and development in the Newport area and other factories in the region.

Nexperia is a customer of foundry services provided by Newport Wafer Fab and became its second largest shareholder in 2019 by investing in Neptune 6 Limited. In addition to the Newport plant, Nexperia’s two other European manufacturing plants in Manchester and Hamburg have also recently received significant investment.

Achim Kempe, Chief Operating Officer of Nexperia, said: “We are excited to expand our global manufacturing operations to Newport. Nexperia has ambitious growth plans and the addition of the Newport facility will help meet the growing global market demand for semiconductors. Newport The factory has a highly skilled operations team that plays a vital role in ensuring supply continuity. We look forward to building a bright future together.”

Dr Paul James, General Manager of the Newport Plant, added: “This acquisition is good news for the employees of the Newport Plant and the wider business community in the region as Nexperia is investing heavily to increase production capacity to ensure long-term stability in the future. We look forward to being part of Nexperia’s global team and hope to retain our current workforce and expand as needed. We are also excited to continue to contribute to the local semiconductor ecosystem.”

Drew Nelson, outgoing NWF Chairman, said: “The change in ownership of the Newport fab marks an important step into the future for the facility and the region. We are pleased to maintain our commitment to developing high-end silicon devices in our 200mm fab. expertise. At the same time, this acquisition also gives us the opportunity to continue developing new compound semiconductor production technologies and become an important part of the compound semiconductor cluster in South Wales.”

The Newport Semiconductor Manufacturing Facility was originally established in 1982 under the name INMOS. Current monthly production capacity is over 35,000 200 mm wafers covering a wide range of semiconductor technologies, from MOSFETs and Trench IGBTs using wafer thinning methods to CMOS, analog and compound semiconductors. The Newport fab, coupled with current 200mm wafer investments in Manchester and Hamburg fabs, will help Nexperia achieve its ambitious strategic growth goals and enrich its IGBT, analog and compound semiconductor product lines. In addition, the acquisition significantly enhances Nexperia’s vehicle-qualified product offering and expands its market share.
